FlightTimes.net is a route-intelligence tool for travellers, aviation teams, and curious map nerds who care less about fares and more about how the world is connected by air.

Instead of hunting through schedules, you start with a city pair. We show you a realistic great-circle path, an estimated gate-to-gate time, and how that route fits into the wider network of popular flights on that continent.

The goal is simple: make it effortless to reason about air travel time between municipalities, without needing a GDS login or a stack of timetables.

How it works

FlightTimes.net ingests public airport and route metadata and combines it with a simple performance model:

  • Airport data: built from open datasets of large airports, normalised by city (municipality) and IATA code.
  • Routing: great-circle paths rendered on a Web Mercator globe, with minor smoothing for visual clarity.
  • Time estimation: a blended climb-cruise-descent model per distance band to estimate block time, plus a simple allowance for taxi and handling.
  • Network view: continent tabs highlight the most heavily used inter-continental routes by seat capacity, based on synthesised 2024-2025 data.

These are planning-grade estimates only. They are designed to be "good enough" for trip sketches, stakeholder decks, and sanity checks, not for operational dispatch.

Matt started FlightTimes.net after a decade in airline network planning, where he spent more time wrestling with spreadsheets and internal tools than actually thinking about journeys.

The original prototype was a side project for briefing non-technical colleagues: "If I say Johannesburg to Toronto, how long is that really, and what else flies in that band?" The answer became a small internal tool, then a public site.

Today the project is maintained as a lightweight reference: a way to keep an intuitive feel for the world's busiest city pairs, without needing to open a booking engine.

  • Approximate timings: all times are modelled estimates — real-world schedules vary by airline, aircraft type, season, air traffic control, and weather.
  • Data sources: inspired by public schedules, timetables, and airport registries; route lists are curated and simplified for clarity.
